Quartz or Granite that is the question?

In the battle of quartz and granite it does all come down to personal choice and both are amazing material. It all depends on what look do you prefer and what are you trying to achieve?  There are many reasons why both quartz and granite are popular choices for stone countertops in kitchens.

Why quartz?

Quartz worktops when compared to granite, is an extremely hard material making it highly durable and appealing.   Although they look natural, they’re not.

When it comes to the design, it offers an array of colours and choices – if you’re looking to match a specific colour or pattern in your kitchen, quartz could be the right material for you.  Unlike granite, quartz is not a natural product – it’s manufactured.  Since the designs are man-made, they can be highly attractive.  You’ll also find a wider range of colours to choose from.  When compared to other worktops, quartz worktops have a unique, glossy finish that’s both luxurious and rich.

Quartz which is a natural stone and the second most abundant material on earth becomes an engineered stone when used to make a worktop.  Unlike granite, quartz is not cut from the earth as a block or a slab.  Natural- quartz crystals are mined, then ground into a dust or an aggregate that’s fused with resin binders under intense heat and pressure to form a solid slab.  Pigments added during the process impart colour to the countertop.  Most mixtures contain around 93% of quartz.

The small portion of resin is added to ensure that the countertop is non-porous.  This means that it will be totally sealed, so anything you spill will not penetrate the material and alter the colour to darken the stain.

Granite Worktops

Truly one-of-a-kind, granite is purely a natural stone that is mined directly from stone quarries across the world.  In fact, granite is the most common igneous rock of the Earth’s crust, solidifying due to the colling of magma.  Granite is then taken to be cut into slabs, polished, and then fabricated into countertops.    The beauty of Granite slabs are they are all slightly different in mineral, pattern and colour meaning that every countertop is unique.
